At least17 people have been injured after a YY bus Reg. No. UAX 852F overturned at Mabira Forest along the Kampala-Jinja highway.
The accident occurred on Tuesday at around 7.30 am at Kanyonyi in Mbaira Forest, Buikwe District. The bus was heading to Kampala from Mbale.
According to the Ssezibwa Regional Police Spokesperson, Ms Hellen Butoto, two people have sustained broken leg injuries and the other 15 have also sustained serious wounds. They were rushed to Kawolo Hospital in Lugazi, Buikwe District to receive treatment.
“The accident might have happened as a result of speeding yet it was raining heavily. The driver lost control of the car and it swerved off the road. “Fortunately, no single death has been registered, and police have managed to rush all the causalities to the nearby hospital,” she said.
Mr David Kalumba, an eyewitness, said they have managed to save the travellers since the accident happened close to a residential area at Kanyonyi.
“Much as it was raining, we managed to hear the crash sound and rushed to the scene to rescue victims,” he said.
Ms Butoto said that investigations are ongoing to determine the actual cause of the accident.
This is the second accident involving YY coaches in a period of three months. Another YY bus, Reg. No. UAS 765V, veered off the road in July at Tirinyi village, Kadama trading centre in Mbale District.
