An urgent meeting has been called at Mahyoro Secondary School in Kitagwenda District after Senior Six candidates protested over their preparation for the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examinations, an unrest in which Headteacher Denis Baguma was assaulted.
The meeting was chaired by the Mahyoro Town Council LC3 Chairperson, Joshua Atumanya, to address the students’ grievances and restore calm.
The candidates accuse the school administration of failing to provide additional teachers and facilitators to help them prepare for the exams. They also complained of inadequate facilities and poor management.
The protest turned chaotic yesterday morning, prompting the deployment of police officers from Kitagwenda Central Police Station and Mahyoro Police Post to restore order and secure the school premises.
The Chairperson of the Board of Governors, Dr. Eric Nzibonera, told our reporter that the board will convene to establish the root cause of the unrest and find lasting solutions.
By press time, calm had been restored, and the candidates were continuing their preparations for the UACE examinations, expected to start next month.
