Tragedy struck this morning at Kabegira along the Fort Portal–Kampala highway when a speeding vehicle knocked down a motorcycle, killing two people instantly.
According to police reports from Kabarole Central Police Station, the accident occurred at around 9:00 a.m. when a Toyota Noah, registration number UBQ 006W, grey in color, lost control and rammed into a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UFW 763F, red in color.
The deceased have been identified as Bwegendaho Charles, 35, a boda boda rider and resident of Kaswa in Kabarole District, and his passenger Kahunde Lucy, 23, a resident of Bunyangabu District. Both victims died on the spot.
Twesigye Vincent the police spokesperson for Rwenzori west said the vehicle, which was heading from Kampala towards Fort Portal, veered off its lane due to over speeding before knocking the motorcycle head-on. The driver of the vehicle is currently on the run.
He added that the scene was visited by the District Traffic Officer (DTO) of Kabarole, who led a team of officers in documenting evidence. The bodies of the deceased were later taken to Buhinga Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination.
Twesigye said both the motor vehicle and motorcycle have been impounded at Fort Portal Police Station pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV) as investigations into the accident continue.
He cautioned motorists against reckless driving and over speeding, urging drivers to exercise maximum caution while using busy highways to avoid loss of lives.
