Journalists from Western Uganda have been urged to equip themselves with knowledge and skills on standards, quality assurance, and accurate measurements to improve reporting on consumer protection issues.
The call was made during a four-day training organized by Uganda National Bureau of Standards-UNBS in partnership with TradeMark Africa and Ultimate Media. The training, which started yesterday, will run until 12th March 2026 at Hotel Triangle in Mbarara.
Speaking during the training, Ivan Lukanda said the standards body, which operates under an Act of Parliament, will continue working closely with the police and other enforcement agencies to inspect companies and businesses across the country.
He explained that the inspections are aimed at ensuring that substandard and expired goods are removed from the market to safeguard public health.
Dr. Lukanda warned that the sale and consumption of expired products can expose the public to serious health risks, including diseases such as cancer, emphasizing the need for strict enforcement of standards and regulations.
He also reminded journalists that the media plays a critical role in educating the public about standards, quality assurance, and proper product labeling. He said accurate and responsible reporting can help increase public awareness and prevent health risks associated with consuming expired or substandard goods.
