The Uganda Episcopal Conference has welcomed the Government’s decision to postpone this year’s national Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations at Namugongo Shrine.
In a press release issued today May 18,signed by the UEC Chair Bishop Anthony Zziwa, the bishops described the move as necessary under the current circumstances, while acknowledging Uganda Martyrs as a symbol of faith, courage, and fidelity to Christ.
Although the national pilgrimage to Namugongo will not be taking place on June 3rd, 2026, dioceses and parishes across the country have been encouraged to organize local commemorations, guided by their bishops and in line with government and health directives.
The Conference has further called on all faithful to remain calm, united, and prayerful, remembering especially the nation, health workers, and those affected by the situation that led to the postponement, including the ongoing Ebola outbreak.
Catholics and the general public are further urged to strictly observe guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health.
The Chairman of the Conference, Joseph Antony Zziwa, also appealed to media houses to provide responsible coverage of the public health situation.
