As Uganda joins the rest of the world in commemorating World Environment Day on June 5, environmentalists are calling on communities to take decisive action against plastic pollution, which continues to pose a major threat to the environment.
The Executive Director of Natural Resources Defense Initiatives (NRDI), Edgar Muganzi, has urged residents across the Rwenzori region and Uganda at large to reduce the use of plastics and dispose of waste responsibly.
Speaking to our reporter ahead of the celebrations, Muganzi said plastic waste remains one of the leading causes of environmental degradation, contributing significantly to pollution in communities, water sources, and ecosystems.
He noted that indiscriminate disposal of plastic materials continues to undermine efforts aimed at conserving the environment and called on the public to adopt environmentally friendly practices.
As part of activities to mark World Environment Day, NRDI will distribute tree seedlings to members of the public interested in tree planting as a way of promoting environmental conservation and combating the effects of climate change.
Muganzi encouraged residents to participate in tree-planting initiatives and work together to create a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment for future generations.
This year’s World Environment Day celebrations highlight the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges, particularly plastic pollution, which remains a growing global concern.
