Arsenal football fans at St. Jude’s CSC Parish Kyarusozi over the wekend gathered in a spirit of gratitude and unity to celebrate a special Thanksgiving Mass.
The Mass was led by Fr. Richard Potthast CSC, a Manchester United supporter, and assisted by Fr. James Burasa, an Arsenal fan who called for a unity beyond sports rivalry.
In his homily, Fr. Potthast congratulated Arsenal fans on reaching a significant milestone after 22 years without a major Premier League win. He also thanked them for organizing the Thanksgiving Mass and for turning up in large numbers, even after their last night’s loss to PSG in a highly contested match.
Fr. Potthast encouraged them to promote unity in their daily lives, especially during moments of competition such as football matches, adding that being a Manchester United fan should not prevent one from building friendships with supporters of other teams.
Holy Trinity Sunday
Observing the Church’s celebration of the Holy Trinity, Fr Pothast highlighted how the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit each play unique roles but remain united as one. He urged Christians to imitate this unity in their communities.
He also reflected on the Gospel story of the visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary to her cousin Elizabeth, describing it as a powerful example of love and care for others.
Fr James Burasa, commended the fans for the Thanksgiving gesture and asked them to utilize the oneness in other developmental projects.
