Religious leaders from Fort Portal City and Kabarole District have been equipped with vital knowledge on Ebola Virus Disease prevention during a sensitization workshop organized by the Uganda Catholic Medical Bureau, Catholic Relief Services, and the Health Office of Fort Portal Diocese.
The workshop brought together faith leaders from different denominations at St.Adolf Ongoing Formation Center Mukaburra, to strengthen community awareness and preparedness against the spread of Ebola.
Representing the Ministry of Health, Dr. Commissioner Micheal Muwanga who explained the need for more vigilance in the Rwenzori region that neighbours DRCongo, urged religious leaders to become ambassadors of accurate health information, emphasizing that places of worship are important platforms for educating communities.
Dr Emmanuel Mugisa, the Fort Portal City Health Officer noted that the timely workshop tipped Religious leaders with basics on Ebola prevention to transfer them to their followers.
He expressed commitment to working with religious institutions in protecting public health.
Participants were educated on what Ebola Virus Disease is, its causes, signs and symptoms, and how it spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person or contaminated materials.
Key prevention measures highlighted included regular handwashing with soap and clean water, avoiding contact with infected persons or dead bodies, reporting suspected cases immediately to health authorities, and observing proper hygiene practices.
Religious leaders were encouraged to share these life-saving messages with their congregations, discourage misinformation and panic, promote early reporting of suspected cases, and support government efforts to prevent the spread of the disease.
The organizers expressed confidence that informed religious leaders will play a critical role in safeguarding their communities through education, vigilance, and responsible action.
