Pope Leo XIV has accepted the resignation of Bishop Callist Rubaramira from the pastoral governance of the Diocese of Kabale in Uganda, and has named Fr. Bonaventure Bosco Gubazire, M.Afr., as his successor.
The appointment was officially announced on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Good Shepherd Rushoroza Cathedral Parish in Kabale Municipality by Rev. Fr. Georges Kwami Kouwonou, who is overseeing the affairs of the Apostolic Nunciature in Uganda.
About Fr Gubazire
Bishop-elect Gubazire was born on 3 March 1974 in Kitumba, within the diocese he will now shepherd.He began his formation at St. Paul’s Minor Seminary in Rushoroza before earning degrees in philosophy and theology in Jinja, Uganda, and Toulouse, France.
A member of the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers), he was ordained a priest in August 2003 and went on to build an extensive career in missionary education and formation, serving communities in Mozambique, Malawi, and the Philippines before his most recent post in Ghana. His academic path included further study in Lyon, Dublin, Jerusalem, and a doctorate in philosophy from the University of San Carlos in Cebu.
Alongside his teaching and administrative roles including terms as rector and dean of studies at several formation houses he also served as a delegate for the Protection of Minors in Malawi. Most recently, he was rector of the St. Martin of Tours Formation House in Ejisu, Ghana, and a member of his province’s governing council.
Bringing to an end the 23 year old Episcopacy of Bishop Callist Rubaramira, Gubazire is set to be the fifth Bishop of Kabale Catholic Diocese, with the past bishops including Most Rev.Gervasius Placid us Nkalanga( the Apostolic Administrator from 1966-1969, Rt Rev Barnabas R.Halem’Imana 1996-1994, Rt Rev.Rovert- Marie Gay 1994-2003, Rt Rev.Callist Rubaramira from 2003-2026.
