More than 70,000 National Identity Cards remain uncollected at National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) offices in Kamwenge District, authorities have revealed.
Kamwenge District Registration Officer Stuart Oyo said more than 90,000 National Identity Cards had been registered in the district, but only about 20,000 had so far been collected.
He attributed the low collection rate partly to the long distances some residents have to travel to access NIRA services at the district headquarters.
To address the challenge, NIRA has started taking registration and other identity services closer to communities by moving operations to the sub-county level, particularly in areas where residents face difficulties travelling to Kamwenge town.
He added that the renewal of National Identity Cards is also ongoing in different sub-counties across the district.
Oyo urged residents whose cards are ready to collect them and encouraged those who have never registered to obtain National Identity Cards.
NIRA has been encouraging citizens to obtain and renew their National Identity Cards, which are required to access a range of government and other essential services.
