The Bishop of Fort Portal Catholic Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr. Robert Muhiirwa, has officially launched Wekomiire Deanary in Kyegegwa District, a move aimed at bringing pastoral and church services closer to Christians in the area.
The new deanary has been curved out of Katoosa Deanary and comprises six parishes: Kakabara, Mpara, Kasule, Hapuyo, Butunduzi and Wekomiire.
During the launch ceremony held yesterday at the Wekomiire Deanary headquarters, Bishop Muhiirwa appointed Rev. Fr. Christopher Kankya, the Parish Priest of Butunduzi Parish, as the first Dean of the newly established denary.
Fr. Venansio Busobozi will continue serving as the Dean of Katoosa Deanary. Bishop Muhiirwa said the establishment of deaneries is intended to ease the administration and coordination of pastoral activities by bringing church leadership closer to Christians.
He explained that Deans work closely with the Vicar General, Pastoral Coordinator and the Bishop to coordinate pastoral activities and ensure effective delivery of church services.
The Bishop urged Christians in Wekomiire Deanary to support and cooperate with their new Dean, saying unity and active participation will be key to the growth and development of the new ecclesiastical structure.
In his homily, Bishop Muhiirwa called on Christians to respond positively to God’s call by turning away from sin and embracing a life of faith and responsibility.
He particularly cautioned Christians against unforgiveness, excessive alcohol consumption and laziness, urging them to promote values that strengthen families, communities and the Church.
New Dean
The newly appointed Dean, Rev. Fr. Christopher Kankya, expressed gratitude to Bishop Muhiirwa for entrusting him with the responsibility and pledged to serve Christians with cooperation, commitment and enthusiasm.
Fr. Kankya described the creation of Wekomiire Deanary as a sign of the growth of the Catholic faith in the area, saying the new administrative structure will help bring pastoral services closer to the people.
The launch marks a new chapter in the pastoral administration of Fort Portal Catholic Diocese, with Wekomiire Deanary expected to strengthen coordination among its six parishes and improve service to the faithful.
