Residents of the Tooro Kingdom have pledged to observe all cultural rituals announced by the Kingdom in honour of the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
The pledge follows the Kingdom’s announcement of nine days of mourning for the fallen king, during which subjects have been encouraged to observe the cultural practices and traditions associated with mourning a monarch.
Speaking to our reporter at Karuzika Palace in Fort Portal City, residents said they are ready to follow the guidelines issued by the Kingdom as a sign of respect for the late Omukama.
Tumusiime Juma Muhenda, one of the residents, described King Oyo as a humble and respectful leader whose reign contributed to the transformation and development of Tooro Kingdom.
Tumusiime said the late king supported development in sectors including education, sports and agriculture, expressing hope that programmes and projects initiated during his reign will be sustained for the benefit of the people of Tooro.
Another resident, Businge Brian, described King Oyo as a role model who positively influenced many people during his reign.
Businge commended the late Omukama for his efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDS and for promoting sports and agriculture, including initiatives encouraging the growing of crops such as coffee and cocoa.
Meanwhile, different associations and groups have continued to gather at Karuzika Palace to pay their respects and mourn the late king.
Among them are members of the Scouts movement, who say King Oyo was a strong supporter and ambassador of the organization.
The Scouts’ leader, Gilbert Muhumuza, said the late Omukama provided land for Scouts activities and supported several of their programmes.
Muhumuza has called upon Tooro Kingdom officials to preserve and promote King Oyo’s legacy so that his contribution to the development of the Kingdom continues to benefit future generations.
The Tooro Kingdom earlier announced nine days of mourning for the late Omukama.
Further details regarding the cultural rituals and other ceremonies to be observed during the King’s burial are expected to be announced by the Kingdom.
