Residents and Leaders within Tooro region have been tasked to join efforts in fighting against the increasing degradation of wetlands that has caused devastating impacts on the environment.
The call was made by Albert Orijabo, the Assistant Commissioner in-charge of Water and Resources Management under the Ministry of Water and Environment during the launch of the Water and Environment Week for Albertine region at Nyabukara in Fort portal on Monday.
He explained that the region has been experiencing extreme climate changes due to the high level of environmental degradation and natural hazards thus observing the need to address such challenges.

Orijabo also noted that as the Ministry of water and environment, they have a catchment management plan, which they are trying to implement, citing Nyamwamba River in Kasese where they have tried to clear channels to ensure that there is no more floods in future.
While flagging off walkers for the 518KM walk, the Fort Portal Central Division Member of Parliament Hon. Alex Ruhunda called upon all people to plant more trees to make Fort portal city the greenest in the world.

Geoffrey Ayeen the head of Uganda Walkers’ Association says they will trek 518KM starting from Fort Portal, Kasese, Mbarara, Masaka to Kampala.
He adds that during their walk, they create awareness among Ugandans about the water and environment conservation and capture issues, challenges, opportunities around water and environment resources and then present them to the line ministries for discussion.
The Theme for the World Water and Environment Week 2024 is “Bridging borders: Water for a peaceful and sustainable Future”.
