Archbishop Emeritus of Tororo Arch diocese, His Grace James Odongo has passed on today morning at Nsambya Hospital, the Uganda Episcopal Conference Secretary-General Msgr John Kauta has confirmed.
According to impeccable sources Bishop Odongo passed on this morning and the cause of the demise couldn’t is readily be available since the hospital administration hadn’t yet released it.
Bishop James Odongo was born in the current Mollo sub county in Tororo district and was ordained priest on 22nd December 1956 and served as priest in the Diocese of Tororo until 25 November 1964, he died at the age of 89years
Odongo was appointed by Pope Paul VI as the ordinate titular bishop of Bahanna on 25 November 1964 and auxiliary bishop of Tororo. He was consecrated as bishop on 16 February 1965 by Cardinal Laurean Rugambwa, Bishop of Roman Catholic Diocese of Bukoba.
On 19 August 1968, he was appointed as Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tororo. On 5 January 1985, Pope John Paul II appointed him to concurrently serve as the bishop of the Military Ordinate of Uganda.
On 2 January 1999, Odongo became the first Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Tororo and retired from that position on 27 June 2007, thus becoming Archbishop Emeritus of Tororo.
In total,Odongo served as bishop for 42 years ( eight of which as Arch bishop) before retiring in 2007.
According to reliable sources, the tentative funeral arrangements are as follows; the body will be picked from Kampala on monday and taken straight to St Austin Cathedral in Mbale for a night vigil.
On Tuesday, the body will leave Mbale for Tororo and will lay at Nyangole Cathedral for a night vigil and burial will be on Wednesday at Nyangole cathedral.
