The annual Diocesan Youth Conference for the Fort Portal Catholic Diocese which began on Tuesday this week attracting over two thousand youths from various parishes of the diocese, has finally come to an end.
The closing ceremony featured a Holy Mass led by Rt. Rev. Dr. Robert Muhiirwa, the Ordinary of Fort Portal Diocese, at St. Adolf Ongoing Formation Center in Mukabura, Fort Portal City.
Speaking shortly after Mass, the Diocesan Youth Chaplain, Rev. Fr. Paul Mugabyomu, praised the conference as a success and acknowledged the collaborative efforts of youth chaplains from all parishes, the youth executive, Bishop Muhiirwa, the Banyatereza sisters, and media houses.
He also commended the youth for their exemplary behavior during the conference and thanked their parents for entrusting the diocese with their children.
Former Diocesan youth leader Nicholas Nuwagaba expressed gratitude to Bishop Muhiirwa, describing him as a “bishop for the youth” for his supportive presence through their challenges and achievements. Nuwagaba also cautioned the girls about the dangers of seeking money from questionable sources likening them to “Tax collectors ”
Youth challenged by inadequate transport
In the same vein, Mr. Augustine Byaruhanga Kaboha, the Fort Portal Diocesan Youth Leader, highlighted the challenge of inadequate transportation for the youth office, which hampers their work. Kaboha also announced his intention to marry his wife in Holy Matrimony and sought financial and spiritual support from his peers.
As the chief guest, Mr. Joseph Mugenyi, the Auditor for National Water and Sewerage Corporation, but also an ex Seminarian advised the Youth Chaplains to explore fundraising within the diocese’s large youth population alongside other donors. He encouraged the youth to let their good actions speak for themselves.
The ex- Seminarian, supported the youth office with 5 million Uganda Shillings.
Mugenyi, who is reportedly considering running forwards the MP seat of Burahya, warned against engaging in unethical politics for monetary gain as the 2026 elections approach.
Bishop Muhiirwa thanked parents for entrusting their children to the diocese for spiritual growth and vocational skills development during the conference. He also expressed gratitude to the youth leaders, Fr. Paul, and Sister Joseline Buhirwa for their efforts in organizing the conference and guiding the youth. He congratulated Youth Leader Kaboha on his commitment to Holy Marriage and for being an exemplary leader.
