The Kabarole district chairperson, Richard Rwabuhinga, has called upon people living in mountainous areas of Karangura, to stay alert and report any cracks that may be seen on the mountain, as landslides continue to cause mayhem in the region.
According to Rwabuhinga, Slope failure has been identified as one of the most commonly occurring natural disasters, leading to financial losses and deaths.
He notes that the existence of cracks on slopes usually provides an easy pathway for rainfall infiltration into soil, allowing rain to infiltrate to deeper layers than in the absence of cracks.
Farmers advised of better farming methods
Rwabuhinga, asks people in the mountains to practice better farming methods, such as massive planting of coffee to avoid soil erosion, rapid mudslides.
The Kabarole Chairman, observes too and that farmers could also dig trenches diverting debris pathways, and rerouting surface water drainage to enable better flow of the running rainny water down slope.
The remarks were directed to residents of Karangura Sub County, in a meeting held at Nyakitokoli-Hamabaale yesterday.
