The Uganda Episcopal Conference Social Communications Commission Chairman, Rt. Rev. Joseph Franzeli has noted with concern over the persistent lack of jobs amidst the high human resource in the country.
In a survey conducted by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) dubbed National Labour Force Survey 2021, it is specified that out of a labour force of 11.3 million people, only 1.3 million accounting for 12 percent are employed.
Rt. Rev. Franzeli, the Bishop Emeritus of Lira Catholic Diocese in his message shortly after mass to mark St. Joseph the Workers Day today at Christus Centre in Arua Diocese said those with qualifications have been denied employment to exercise their skills and competencies which has contributed to low productivity in the country.
Bishop Franzelli further says violations of workers’ rights, poor pay among others are areas that should also be addressed in order to improve the working environment.
He emphasizes by urging workers especially in the Catholic institutions to employ modern knowledge and skills in service delivery by having the spirit of service which St. Joseph exercised during his lifetime on earth.
At least 120,459 workers left Uganda between January 2022 and December 2023 in search of employment according to data from the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development
