The Bishop of Fort Portal Catholic Diocese, Rt. Rev. Robert Muhiirwa Akiiki, has officially launched the construction of a new church at St. Joseph’s Kyamatanga Catholic Parish in Bunyangabu District, estimated to cost 3 billion shillings. As a symbolic gesture, the Bishop yesterday dug the first hoe to mark the beginning of the project.
Bishop Muhiirwa, who began the ceremony by blessing the parishioners of Kyamatanga, as well as the designated land and building materials, shared a Bible verse emphasizing that the true house of God is built by people of faith.
He encouraged Christians to support the project generously, noting that the new church will not only serve as a place of worship but also as a center of spiritual healing, since it will house the Blessed Sacrament once completed.
The Bishop further urged the community to aim for a modern and dignified structure that glorifies God, and to entrust the work to professional engineers who will deliver quality construction not shoddy work.He personally supported the initiative with a cash contribution of 200,000 shillings.
The Parish Priest Kyamatanga, Rev. Fr. Francis Asaba, hailed the Bishop for inspiring the parishioners to build a church for God, saying he is confident that the project will succeed with God’s help.
Joseph Rwabukuuku, Chairperson Council of the Laity Kyamatanga, announced that actual construction is set to begin next Monday, reporting that out of their initial budget of 50 million shillings, the parish already has 45 million available on the account.
He commended the Bishop for the launching their construction, and appealed for further support from well-wishers both near and far to help bring the project to completion.
