Residents of Bundibugyo have been encouraged to support their children’s education to better prepare them for Uganda’s competitive job market.
This appeal was yesterday made by Bishop Robert Muhiirwa Akiiki of the Fort Portal Catholic Diocese during a celebration marking 85 years of Mr. Zaverio Bitigale, an ADF survivor, and 25 years of his marriage, held in Bugombwa and Bundibugyo. Mr. Bitigale was praised for raising notable citizens, including Catholic priest Rev. Fr. Godfrey Bamuganyire.

Bundibugyo District, has historically struggled with education, facing challenges such as children prioritizing cocoa harvesting over schooling and the discrimination against the Batwa community in accessing education, leaving many without educational opportunities.
Bishop Muhiirwa highlighted the importance of parents continuously supporting children in schools, emphasizing the need for hard work to achieve academic success among the children. He also called for unity within families, noting that the strong bond between Mr. and Mrs. Zaverio likely contributed to their successful marriage.
Additionally, the Bishop advocated for mixed farming, encouraging Bundibugyo residents to plant coffee and Gonja bananas alongside cocoa to improve household income.
Residents warned on Cocoa Theft
As the cocoa harvesting season approaches, the Bugombwa LC1 chairperson warned against cocoa theft and announced plans for random patrols to address this issue.
Hon. Josephine Babungi Bebona, the Bundibugyo woman MP, praised Bishop Muhiirwa for his inspiring message and reiterated the importance of education. She remarked that without Mr. Zaverio’s commitment to educating his children, this celebration would not have been possible.
