The Bishop of Fort Portal Catholic Diocese, Rt.Rev.Robert Muhiirwa Akiiki has urged Christians to take the Lenten season as a time to reflect more deeply on their daily lives and to fast from what they love most, rather than limiting themselves only to abstaining from meat on Fridays and Ash Wednesday.
He made the call during his homily at Virika Cathedral while presiding over Ash Wednesday Mass, marking the beginning of the Lenten season.
The Bishop elaborated on the three pillars of Lent, prayer, fasting, and almsgiving noting that many people today spend much of their time on mobile phones. He encouraged the faithful to reduce time spent on their phones and instead dedicate more time to prayer and other meaningful activities, But also urged them to use the phones to disseminate positive messages, rather than promoting divisionism.

He also advised those who enjoy certain foods and drinks, such as alcohol, pork, and meat, to consider giving them up during this sacred season as away of fasting.
Bishop Muhiirwa further echoed the Lenten message of Pope Leo XIV, calling on Christians to deepen their prayer life and avoid harsh language, especially on social media, in political debates, workplaces, and within communities.
Christians ready for Lent
Meanwhile, Mr. Edward Bagonza of Virika Cathedral Parish described Lent as a special period for reconciliation. He called on fellow believers to forgive one another, share with those in need, and pray and fast for peace in the nation.
In the same move, Ms. Cecilia, also a member of Virika Cathedral Parish, said the Lenten season helps her grow closer to God. She noted that it encourages her to forgive more readily and to share her possessions with others.
