The Bishop of Fort Portal Catholic Diocese, Rt. Rev. Robert K. Muhiirwa Akiiki, has reiterated his call for humility in service, especially among those entrusted with the responsibility of caring for others.
He made the appeal yesterday while presiding over a Mass to commission a new theatre and private ward at Kyakatara Health Center III, a project supported by the U.S.based organization, Children Waiting Everywhere.
Bishop Muhiirwa emphasized that people in positions of service should remain conscious of their shared identity as God’s creatures. He noted that it is common for some to forget this, leading to actions that go beyond their mandate even to the extent of mistreating others. Drawing from the day’s Scripture, he cited the example of apostles Barnabas and Paul, who remained humble despite performing miracles and facing criticism, always giving glory back to God.
He encouraged believers to pray for those suffering from various illnesses and to offer hope to the hopeless, in line with this Jubilee year’s theme, Pilgrims of Hope.
During the Mass, Bishop Muhiirwa also paid tribute to the late Fr. Peter Cornelius Kyakatara, founder of the health center. He acknowledged Fr. Kyakatara’s perseverance through many challenges to establish the facility, which has since saved numerous lives. He also remembered the late Sr. Magdalene, a lab technician at the center who recently passed away.
Rev. Fr. Taddeus Tusiime, chaplain of the Kyakatara community, expressed gratitude to the donors, especially through the efforts of Miss Naomi, for funding the facility’s upgrades and covering the salary of a specialist to operate the theater.
Rev. Fr.Jude Kasaija Amooti, the Diocesan Health Coordinator, confirmed that the first-ever surgical operation at the new theater was successfully carried out yesterday, encouraging residents to make full use of the improved facility.
Hon. Faith Philo Kunihira, Woman MP for Kyenjojo District, praised the health center as one of the longest-serving in the area and commended the Catholic Church for its continued advocacy for the community. She also urged staff to ensure transparency and to share success stories to support future funding opportunities.
