As Uganda marks 62 years of independence, Rt. Rev. Dr. Robert Muhiirwa, Ordinary of the Fort Portal Catholic Diocese, has urged government leaders to prioritize activities that promote national development rather than regression.
The Bishop made these remarks during his homily at a celebration for Mr. Zaverio Bitigale the Father to Fr Godfrey Bamuganyire, who was honored for both his 85th birthday and the silver jubilee of his marriage at an event that took place at Bugombwa, Bundibugyo District.
Bishop Muhiirwa encouraged Ugandans to reflect on the first stanza of the national anthem and to consistently pray for peace in the country.
Citing Mr. Bitigale’s family, who expressed gratitude for their father’s life despite his health challenges, the Bishop called on the congregation to cultivate a habit of thanking God for the gift of life, which is often taken for granted.
He praised Mr. and Mrs. Bitigale for their commitment to prayer and their role in nurturing a priest, urging the Bundibugyo community to pray for more religious vocations and to support families that produce priests and religious figures committed to serving God.
The Bishop emphasized the importance of participating in existing prayers and engaging in Mass and Eucharistic Adoration to foster these vocations.
He also encouraged Christians to care for the elderly by providing for their medical needs, clothing, and financial support, especially when they are unable to care for themselves.
Mzee Bakamanyaki Athanasius Tom, speaking on behalf of the organizing committee, acknowledged Mr. Bitigale’s contributions to the development of Bugombwa and his commitment to instilling positive values and marriage practices in his family.
Rev. Fr. Godfrey Bamuganyire expressed gratitude to the Bishop, clergy, and the Christian community for their support on this significant day. He described his father as a survivor of the ADF attack and thanked God for allowing him to witness his 85th birthday despite his health issues.
Rev. Fr. Patrick Tukwasiibwe, Parish Priest of Bugombwa, commended ICAM Chocolate Company for their efforts in improving local infrastructure in honor of the Bishop’s visit. He also encouraged the clergy and community to continue praying for vocations.
As the guest of honor, Mr. Zaverio Bitigale attributed his longevity to God’s mercy and urged all believers to trust in God without doubt. He praised his son, Fr. Bamuganyire, for earning respect and hosting the Bishop, and recognized Rev. Fr. Kakwezi Benedict and Fr. Mutangirizi for their inspiration and support in his son’s priestly journey.
