The State House Anti Corruption Unit (SHACU) yesterday October 12, 2022, arrested five officials belonging to Bunyangabu district local government, over charges of steering financial loss, conspiracy to defraud government and abuse of office.
The arrested officials
The arrested officials have been identified as Lucy Ikiriza the Principal human resource officer (HRO), Yusta Asiimwe the district production Officer (DPO) and Gerald Tumwesigye the district agriculture officer (DAO).
The others cited in the same category, include Joseph Basaliza the district chief finance officer (CFO) and Elon Rujumba the Sub County Chief for Kabonero in Bunyangabu district.
The above, were arrested by plain clothed detectives, who picked them from the district headquarters in Kibiito. The detectives, reportedly first grilled by the the officials, before taking them for custody at the Bunyangabu district Central Police Station.
What leaders say
According to Wycliffe Mukama, the lead investigator, Asiimwe the DPO, Twesigye the DAO and Basaliza the CFO mismanaged over 90M Shillings that had been allocated for the implementation of the Agriculture Cluster Development Project (ACPD) in the district.
Ikiriza the HRO, is also solely accused of causing the government a financial loss of over 50M Shillings which was illegally paid to the three teachers fraudulently recruited on the government pay roll.
Mukama further explained that their investigations pointed to the fact that Rujumba the Kabonero Sub County Chief mismanaged a sum of sh 5.8m under the District Discretion Equalization Grant (DDEG).
