The Secretary for Community Development, Production, and Environment in Central Division, Kengonzi Elizabeth, has resigned from her position yesterday, citing alleged corruption scandals and a lack of independence among division leaders. According to Kirungi, she was appointed to the executive to discuss important matters affecting the electorate, but was surprised to find that they were not given the opportunity to do so.
Kengonzi explained that when some executive members tried to address critical issues and mistakes made by political leaders and technocrats, they were labeled as rebels. As a result, she decided to resign in order to have an independent voice in the full council and focus on matters that concern the people who elected them.
Kengonzi further revealed that she and fellow councilors had recently petitioned the office of the city clerk regarding the progress and use of funds for various division projects. Despite writing several letters to division authorities, they received no response, and some political leaders turned against them.
She mentioned projects like the rehabilitation of Balya Road Green Belt, land theft belonging to the division, illegal individual collection of council funds, and the 1 billion shillings road fund, which the councilors believe are tied to corruption within the division.
In response, Richard Muhumuza, a division leader, told our reporter that he would not allow Kengonzi to resign without providing proof of her allegations. Muhumuza stated that for the past three months, he had been requesting Kengonzi to present evidence to the council, but she had failed to do so.
He mentioned that he suspended her from executive meetings for two months until she could provide proof, and expressed surprise at her resignation letter being submitted today.
