Delays in the prosecution of cases, un coordination between the anti-corruption agencies have been seen as the major catalysts of corruption in the region
This was observed at the opening of the Anti-corruption convention On Wednesday at the Kabarole District Head Quarter’s in Kitumba. The convention which was organized by Ruwenzori Anti-Corruption Coalitionunder the theme A just Corruption Free Society was graced by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Lady Justice Jane Frances Abodo as the chief guest.
In the report presented by RAC, the delays in prosecution of cases brought before the courts of law have been seen as the major engine to the rampant corruption cases in the region because the perpetrators of those cases take long or are never upheld.
Angela Byangwa, the executive director of Ruwenzori Anti-Corruption Coalition observed that this has even been made more worse by the presence of only one government analytical laboratory in the country that has led to major murder cases in the region to stale because the results from the samples to use in the case take long to return usually between two to six months.
In the report, a total of 2013 cases of corruption were reported to RAC in this year alone with Kamwenge district coming at the top with the highest number of corruption cases at 489, Kasese came second with 377 cases, Bundibugyo district was the third at 275 cases while Kyegegwa district had the least number of corruption cases at 95.
RAC says that these were presented to various stakeholders for response through various platforms including community feedback meetings, district integrity promotion Forums and Social Audits among others.
Cissy Kagaba, the Executive Director of the Anti- Corruption Coalition Uganda said that the fight of corruption goes to the person’s integrity and not about the salaries the government officials are getting.
