Central division executive in Fort Portal city, has threatened to deny any tomatoes and onion sellers who bring dry banana leaves and onion leaves and stems to the market.
Speaking to journalists at his office, Richard Muhumuza, the central division mayor noted that executive survey in Kabundaire market, has found out that garbage burden at the market is a lot.
This he says, is majorly caused by tomatoes traders who carry dry banana leaves to protect their products, and onion sellers who bring their products with leaves and stems, all these are dumped at the garbage sites, increasing garbage burden.
According to Muhumuza, starting April, vendors of businesses in question should use wooden boxes or carry their products in sacks to avoid colliding with officials who will be at the entrance to enforce the directive.
Murungi Daphne, Kiiza Adolf, sellers of onions say they bring onions in the market while still fresh and there is no way they can do away with it. She argues that removing stems and leaves damages the product while Abraham Mugaanzi, who sells tomatoes says that other suggested alternatives may be expensive for their low income businesses.
