Authorities in Bundibugyo district ,have heightened surveillance activities to curb the spread of Ebola disease after it was announced in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.
Residents have been warned against unnecessary movements across the common border following the resurgence of the deadly Ebola virus in DR Congo
Uganda at risk
Friday Isaiah, the mayor Busunga town council, says that the outbreak of Ebola in DR Congo puts Uganda at risk. Hence restricting residents from crossing into DR Congo saying they risk contracting the highly contagious Ebola disease.
According to the world health organization, Ebola is a highly contagious hemorrhagic fever that causes a range of symptoms including fever, voting, diarrhea, pain, and in many cases internal and external bleeding.
Last week, Fort Portal City RCC Angalia Godwin Kasigwa revealed that the government was planning to carry out vaccination exercises for people living near the borders especially Bundibugyo, Kasese, Ntoroko, and the rest of the Rwenzori region.
He revealed that the campaign started with immunizing UPDF Soldiers at Muhoti Mountain Division headquarters since they currently operate from Congo.
UNICEF on ground already
According to UNICEF they have pitched camp in the North Kivu Province with a field office in Goma covering the North Kivu and Maniema provinces comprising 56 staff as well as a sub-office in Beni.
UNICEF team is supporting the provincial and local government to respond to this 4th outbreak in the North Kivu province, the 15th for the DRC.
