The Fort Portal North division councilors, led by their speaker, have protested over delayed payment of their emoluments by the Fort Portal city for about 8 months.
The incident
It was yesterday morning, when angry councilors led by a one Rose Kajubu, stormed the Karambi North division headquarters.
While at Karambi in the office of mayor Joseph Mashuhuko, the councilors shouted “we want our money or else we are sleeping here”
They further revealed that they have spent eight full months without any payments and that they are demanding their ex gratia which the city has since failed to pay them.
The ex gratia they explained, was only had four times, on top of being taxed 30%, an act they regarded illegal.
Councilors on Strike
Rose Kajubu, the speaker North Division, says that the failure to pay the councilor’s ex gratia, has hindered service delivery to the community since they are not well facilitated.
Notable to her, some councilors have quite often failed to attend Council sessions due to lack of transport.

Councilors demand about 57 Million
According to Joseph Mashuhuko, the division Mayor, on January 31, the councilors met up with the city clerk who promised to pay them but all in vain.
He revealed that the councilors are demanding about 57M shillings since the last financial year. As they work on settling the grievances, Mashuhuko called for calmness among the councilors saying that the feedback will be given as soon as possible.
Asaba Edison Ruyonga, the mayor said that the councilors strike has been long overdue.
He has attributed the entire matter to some corrupt technocrats who are currently on interdiction and have been intentionally failing to pay councilors with an aim of what he termed as looting people’s money.
