The Bishop of Fort Portal Catholic Diocese, Rt Rev. Dr. Robert Muhiirwa Akiiki, has reiterated the urgent need for peace and unity within families as a crucial step in combating domestic violence.
He made this statement during a Thanksgiving Mass and housewarming ceremony for Mr. and Mrs. Leopoda Tibamanya, gifted to them by their children, including Mr. and Mrs. Venari Tusiime Rwigyema in Buryansungwe, Kitagwenda district.
Reflecting on the day’s scripture, Bishop Muhiirwa highlighted Christ’s message of “Peace be with you,” emphasizing the importance of genuine love and forgiveness. He lamented the troubling prevalence of domestic violence in many families, noting instances where children have harmed their parents over property disputes.
Bishop Muhiirwa expressed gratitude to Mr. Venari Rwigyema and his family for building a modern home for their parents, viewing it as a significant act of love and appreciation. He underscored the importance of thanking God for parents and recognizing the various blessings in our lives.
He also referenced the Pope’s message on the World Day of the Elderly, reminding the younger generation to care for their parents in their old age and encouraging married couples to appreciate each other’s contributions.
The Bishop encouraged the congregation to use this year of prayer to prepare spiritually for the upcoming Jubilee year announced by Pope Francis. He suggested several approaches to deepen their prayer life, including reflecting on the readings during Mass, preparing for the Eucharist, and regularly participating in adoration to pray for families and vocations.
During the event, Mr. Leopoda Tibamanya thanked his children for their thoughtfulness, attributing their family’s success to unity and hard work. He advised women to support their husbands’ efforts and stop underlooking jobs, sharing how his wife, through her mat-weaving, contributed to the family’s prosperity and has been a faithful family treasurer.
Mr. Rwigyema also expressed gratitude to his wife and siblings for their collective efforts in honoring their parents, praising them for their sacrifices and the values instilled in them that led to their success as businesspeople.
