The Bishop of Fort Portal Catholic Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr. Robert Muhiirwa Akiiki, has provided an update on the renovation of Virika Cathedral and has appealed for additional funds from Christians to support the remaining work.
Durable Iron Sheets
During his weekly show “Ekigambo Ky’omuliisa” yesterday on Jubilee Radio, Bishop Muhiirwa reported significant progress in the renovation, noting that the roofing is nearly complete.
He addressed concerns from some Christians about the type of iron sheets used, explaining that the current sheets are 24 gauges, which are thick and durable enough to last for up to a century.
This choice he explained, was made to resolve issues encountered with the previous type of iron sheets.
The Bishop, further outlined the next steps, which include installing terrazzo and completing other areas of the cathedral. He commended the Steering Committee for their efforts and thanked Christians for their generous support so far.
However, with the contract stipulating that the renovated building must be handed over by November, Bishop Muhiirwa highlighted that current funds are insufficient for the final payments.
He urged Christians to contribute towards raising the remaining 1.6 billion shillings, particularly through the upcoming fundraising event in October, which will be announced in due course.
