Fort Portal city Boda Boda riders Association ,Fins Medical University and Fort Portal Women Intercessors have today joined the central division council authorities to conduct a monthly cleaning exercise.
The monthly routine exercise which was led by the Boda boda riders focused on maintaining cleanliness of the Lorry Park and Nyakaseke taxi park in central division Fort Portal whose status of cleanliness remains far from acceptable standards.
City council blamed for failing to Control garbage
The stakeholders who participated in the exercise, expressed concern over the city council authorities’ failure to enforce garbage control guidelines which has seen the cleanliness of the city deteriorate especially in Fort portal lorry park, Nyakaseke Park and Bwamba road drainage which is heavily stagnated with sewage.
Speaking during the monthly cleaning exercise, the Fort Portal city boda boda chairperson Edward Rugumayo stated that the office of boda boda riders will at all occasions render a helping hand to Fort Portal city council to promote cleanliness in the city for a better working space.
Rugumayo, further asked the city council to put into enforcement the ordinance guidelines to further make it hard for the population to litter the city.
Elizabeth Kengonzi the Rwengoma Ward division councilor who represented the Mayor Central division, said they are seeking to pass a bylaw as a division that compels the business community to dedicate two hours every last Friday of the month for the cleaning exercise.
Kengonzi maintains that the bylaw will be supported by heavy deterrent measures that include hefty fines for all those who shall adamantly refuse to participate in the exercise for the common good of the city.
The city senior health inspector Ms. Lucy Kahunde said the city is now focusing on implementing the existing and newly introduced by laws to compel every business community member to own a dustbin at their shops and other places of work to mitigate the irresponsible littering.
Fort Portal city council over the years was known to being one of the cleanest cities across the country, however with the expansion of administrative units, change of administration, laxity on law enforcement of instituted bylaws and poor funding, the city is yet to regain her status as the number one cleanest city in the country.
