The Fort portal City Mayor Asaba Ruyonga has dedicated his birthday celebrations to cleaning the City and ensuring that his people live in a clean and safe environment.
The event that stormed the tourism city with a hive of activities during the September cleaning Campaign was organized by AFRIYEA in partnership with Fort Portal City council.
The long day of cleaning the city, tree planting and blood donation was embraced by many participants from City council leadership, business community and the city dwellers.
The sparkling cleaning event didn’t spare the City Mayor in his office as it was majorly organized to celebrate his new age.
AFRIYEA together with council led by the City clerk and the Environmental Officer the lead organizers wanted to use this Campaign to capture the public interest into environmental conservation activities.
Speaking at the event, the day’s main celebrant Asaba Ruyonga appreciated the organizers for surprising him with a nice initiative of cleaning, tree planting and blood donation as he celebrated his new age.
As the mayor of this city, I want to pledge our efforts to AFRIYEA and all other organisations that are really working to make fort Portal City more cleaner” Ruyonga noted.
Festus Bandeeba the deputy Resident City Commissioner commended AFRIYEA for the good work and called upon the general public to keep the spirit of volunteerism and patriotism if they are willing to serve their communities in different capacities.
Rodgers Tumusiime speaking on behalf AFRIYEA said that Uganda and the entire world is chocking with plastics, rivers are all blocked with plastics which have resulted into the death of marine life and deforestation that has become an order of the day because of too much pressure for the limited resources.
According to Tumusiime, AFRIYEA is working with various partners like the City Council to ensure that Fort Portal is not only a tourism City but a Green City in Africa as well.
Being a green city is another tourist attraction point where by we shall have many people coming to see the green city in Africa” he said.
He adds that in a bid to achieve this, they will use a number of ways one of which is turning people’s birthdays into cleaning Campaigns and tree planting days.
