Fort Portal city has seen a notable improvement in its battle against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) since the quarantine measures were lifted.
Reportedly, experts have not recorded any new infections in the past two weeks, signaling a positive trend.
Improvement attributed to Collaborative efforts
Dr. Stanley Businge, the production officer for Fort Portal city, credited this achievement to the collaborative efforts in combating the disease.
He expressed optimism about declaring Fort Portal FMD-free after the six-month mark.
However, Stanley expressed concern about some farmers who have not adhered to prescribed protocols, such as avoiding street grazing and purchasing milk only from recognized dairies within Fort Portal.
He attributed this to lax enforcement and called on the public to assist in identifying and correcting non-compliance to prevent a resurgence of the disease.
The quarantine, imposed by Dr. Anna Rose Ademun of the Ministry of Agriculture on January 19, 2024, was a response to the FMD outbreak in Kabarole and Fort Portal, aiming to restrict livestock movement and related product sales
