The deputy mayor Fort Portal city, Hon. Stella Marunga, has observed that some parts of the city have got poor sanitation facilities.
Marunga, warns that the issue needs to be addressed with immediate effect, for fear of disease outbreak.
During a joint monitoring exercise organized by the Fort Portal City Sanitation Coordination Committee meeting with support from NRDI (Natural Resources Defense Initiative), the committee inspected Kiculeta Cell, Rukongora cell and Kabundaire Farmers market, where they observed a lot of irregularities in terms of sanitation and hygiene.
According to Hon. Marunga, there is a need for these communities to be sensitized by city authorities on the dangers of not having proper sanitation facilities.
“The landlords of these places need to be brought on board and be sensitized about which sanitation facilities to have, otherwise the open defection that is being carried out in these places is putting our water bodies particularly River Mpanga at risk,” explained Marunga.
According to Joseph Ndamira Musirikale, the Counselor representing Nyabukara Ward in Central division Fort Portal City,it is vital for the technical staff to work hand in hand with the Political wing, and ensure that these places start observing proper hygiene to avoid tarnishing the image of the City.
“Our City is known for cleanliness in the whole country, let us work hard to maintain. it will really be a shame for One of the City suburbs to have an outbreak of cholera. ” he said.
