As the Education Month in the Fort Portal Catholic Diocese approaches its climax tomorrow, Mr. Trophy Atuhairwe, Chairperson of the Association of Catholic Heads of Education Institutions (ACHEI) doubling as the Head Teacher St.Leo’s College Kyegobe, has highlighted the importance of science and practical skills development in Catholic schools within the Diocese, as prioritized in the exhibition.
This initiative was showcased at an exhibition held at Sts. Peter and Paul Primary School in Virika, witnessed by our reporter where students from various primary and secondary schools displayed their hands-on work.
Among the exhibited items were handmade crafts, science projects, locally produced soap and salt, dustbins, food flasks, sanitary towels, sweaters, and balanced diet products.
Food and nutrition
In an interview with Jubilee Radio, Carolyn Kirungi, a Pupil from Sts. Peter and Paul, shared that her group focused on balanced diet items to educate others about the essential nutrients needed for healthy bodies.
Timothy Agutamba, another student from the same project, emphasized the importance of viewing food as medicine not medicine as food, highlighting that unhealthy diets contribute significantly to non-communicable diseases in Uganda.
Advocating for mental health
At the exhibition, Lucky Martha, a pupil from Butebe Primary School, addressed the issue of girls dropping out of school due to a lack of sanitary products. She noted their efforts in producing reusable sanitary towels to encourage girls to create their own solutions, helping them remain in school and avoid the high costs of disposable pads.
Rev. Fr. Andrea Isingoma, the Diocesan Schools Inspector, mentioned that while some schools successfully showcased their work, others were affected by rain, prompting a rescheduling of the general exhibition to September 27.
The Climax
The climax of the celebration will feature a brass band procession from St. Charles Lwanga Town Parish to Sts. Peter and Paul Primary School, culminating in a Mass led by Bishop Robert K. Muhiirwa Akiiki, the ordinary of Fort Portal Catholic Diocese.
Recently, Bishop Muhiirwa has been a strong advocate for education in the Diocese, urging parents to support their children in pursuing practical skills to better prepare them for the competitivejob market in Uganda.
