Preparatory meetings have begun in the Diocese of Fort Portal in anticipation of the official re-opening and re-dedication of the newly renovated Our Lady of Snows Virika Cathedral.
Msgr. Isaiah Mayombo Adyeri, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee and Vicar General of the Diocese, stated that the re-dedication of the Virika Cathedral on March 2, 2025, is not merely a ceremonial event but a deeply spiritual occasion.
Re-dedication of the Cathedral more than just a function
Speaking to selected committee members for the event at St. Mary’s Seminary Virika today, Msgr. Mayombo emphasized that the re-dedication represents a fresh call for spiritual renewal and a renewed commitment to God as a family in Fort Portal. He noted that the community has faced physical, spiritual, mental, and social challenges and is now coming together to restore its connection with God in His House.
The Vicar General also expressed gratitude for the generous financial contributions from individuals, companies, and organizations that supported the renovation project, giving an assurance that the committee would work tirelessly to ensure fair representation on the day of the event.
Msgr. Mayombo outlined some of the events leading up to the rededication, including pilgrimages from various parishes to the cathedral, a pre-vigil filled with hymns and prayers to prepare Christians for the occasion, among other activities.
Unite for a successful day- Bp Muhiirwa
In his Christmas message last week, Bishop Robert Muhiirwa Akiiki of Fort Portal Diocese announced a change in the date for the cathedral’s official reopening, moving it from February 23rd to March 2nd, 2025. The Pope’s representative to Uganda, (Papal Nuncio) Luigi Bianco, will be the main celebrant, with the President of Uganda, H.E YKM expected to be the Chief Guest, alongside other distinguished guests.
Bishop Muhiirwa, addressed the organizing committee today, urging collective efforts among the various subcommittees to ensure the success of the event, while also emphasizing the importance of dedicating the day to God in prayer.
Over the years, the cathedral has undergone three major renovations: in 1987, 2003, and most recently between 2023 and 2024, with a primary focus on permanently addressing the roof leakage which is valued at 3.6billion Shs
