As a way of his commitment to leading Tooro people in alignment with national programs, His Majesty the King of Tooro, Dr. Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, has today participated in the ongoing National Identity Card renewal exercise, with a call on subjects to actively take part in the very exercise.
The renewal exercise, took place at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal City, where officials from the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), facilitated the renewal of IDs for several Kingdom leaders, including the Tooro Premier, Owek. Armstrong Calvin Rwomiire, among others.
New Features
Addressing Press shortly after the exercise, Premier Rwomiire Armstrong praised the King for setting a strong example, calling upon all Tooro citizens to renew their IDs & register for the first time. He highlighted the improved features of the current ID cards, emphasizing their increasing relevance in day-to-day activities.
“We are grateful to His Majesty Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV for setting a good example for the rest of the subjects by having his ID renewed. We call upon all citizens to actively engage in this activity which confirms their citizenship. Unlike the previous IDs, the current ones are improved with new features which we should not miss out.” Said Rwomiire
Tooro people positively embracing the exercise
The NIRA Officer in Charge of Kabarole District and Fort Portal City, Mr. Junior Akampurira, commended the King for embracing and promoting National ID renewal, and also provided updates on the progress of the exercise in the region.
According to Mr. Akampurira, over 3,000 individuals in Kabarole and Fort Portal have renewed their IDs, while 500 new applicants have registered for the first time. Nationwide, approximately 2.5 million people have so far their national identity cards.
Christine Nyakaisiki, a NIRA official from Kabarole, emphasized the importance of possessing a renewed ID, especially the current version, which contains updated features like eyeris essential for accessing services such as education, healthcare, business, and government support. She urged all eligible Ugandans to participate in the ongoing, free-of-charge registration and renewal exercise.
