The Fort Portal city council has allocated 1.827 billion shillings to procure 200 additional street lights, a move aimed at enhancing public safety and promoting economic activities in the city.
The allocation was made during an extraordinary council meeting, where the City Executive, led by Deputy Mayor Betty Mujungu Pendo, presented a motion to utilize USMID savings of 1.827 billion shillings.
Targeted areas
The project will cover both Central and North divisions on tarmac roads, focusing on areas that were previously part of the former Fort Portal municipality.
The additional street lights will be installed in busy tarmac centers in North division, including Butebe, Karago, Karambi, Harubaaho, Kamwenge Road, Kitumba, and others. In Central division, the lights will be installed in dark areas along Kampala Road, including Kitumba.
According to Mujungu, the project will benefit the night economy and help combat criminality in the area. The street lights will provide a safer environment for residents and visitors alike, particularly those who have been affected by dark areas and criminal activity.
Why the additional lights
According to Mujungu, the move is aimed at mitigating night thugs in the highlighted areas of the city who take advantage of dark corners, thus allocation of funds for the street lights is a significant step towards improving public safety and promoting economic growth in Fort Portal City.
