Bagire Paul, the Head of the Orthopedic Department at Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital, Buhinga, has been directed to hand over office keys to the Hospital Director and given one week to defend himself on allegations of extorting money and mismanagement of patients.
The hospital director, Dr. Archibald Bahiizi, acknowledges the fact that the victim has previously received several warnings regarding extortion and patient mismanagement, but has refused to change.
Paul Bagire’s luck ran out of hand after a whistleblower and resident, Patrick Kamulindwa, dodged a complaint accusing the health worker of trafficking a male patient whose details had been concealed from Buhinga hospital sickbed, drove off to a private clinic in Kyenjojo district.
Investigations
Preliminary investigations from the facility CCTV footage have confirmed Bagire driving the patient in question from the hospital using his vehicle, yet the patient had not requested a discharge nor a referral.
Now the director, Dr. Bahizi Archibald, has decided to first relieve Bagire of his office as head of the Orthopedic department with immediate effect and instructed him to hand over the office keys to enable him to file a defence within one week, which shall proceed with disciplinary action.
While addressing reporters on Thursday, Dr. Bahiizi applauded the whistleblower Patrick Kamulindwa and urged the public to embrace reporting such cases not only to hospital authorities but also to other responsible offices
