Following tension that has been on the hearts of the Mpanga Market footbridge which has been in a sorry state, the residents have commended the Fort Portal city authorities for solving their problem.
According to residents, the small footbridge has been having rotten and broken timbers leaving holes that had put their life at risk especially as school going children were returning back to school today.
The bridge has been used by both pedestrians and school going children like Mpanga SS, Fort Portal, Buhinga primary among other schools.
Musinguzi Robert a vendor at Mpanga market said that the bridge has been broken for about three months and the city authority had paid a blind eye, stating that now it has been worked on, sanity has been restored.He added that much as there was some repair there is an urgent need for fresh timbers for it to last longer.
Linda Irene Mugisa the Fort Portal woman Mp, who was at the site, commended the people of Fort Portal for being calm until the situation was finally handled.
Linda further requested the people of Fort Portal to maintain hygiene in the town through working with the relevant authorities with an aim of restoring the glory of Fort Portal.
The speaker for Fort Portal city Ahebwa Gilbert disclosed that the city has plans of using steel beams and concrete with no more woods in the near future.
