Local council leader in the central division of Fort Portal City, have been rallied to establish security committees in every village to address the growing incidents of theft.
Theft cases noted to be on the increase
Addressing residents of Bulyanyenje village in Nyabukara ward, Central Division, Fort Portal City during a security meeting, Afande Charles Muhereza , the Officer in Charge(OC) of the Central Division Police Station, highlighted the rising theft cases in the area.
OC Muhereza,suggested establishing WhatsApp security forums, sharing information with security personnel, and registering all residents in each village as potential solutions.
The Central division Mayor, Richard Muhumuza, asked residents to collaborate with the police in identifying high-risk areas and share vital information, to lay the groundwork for combating crime within the village.
Fort Portal City Speaker, Hon.Albert Ahebwa, announced the city’s initiative to install streetlights on paved roads throughout Fort Portal City, aiming to deter thieves from targeting these areas.
Government to protect people and their property
Fort Portal City Woman Member of Parliament, Honorable Linda Irene Mugisa, assured residents of the government’s commitment to safeguarding both people and their property.
She highlighted government programs such as Emyooga and the Parish Development Model (PDM)aimed at uplifting communities from poverty. Hon.Linda, encouraged residents to participate in identity card renewal exercises to facilitate the identification of individuals engaged in criminal activities within the community.
The meeting, convened by the LC1 chairperson, coincides with a period of heightened concern among residents regarding the surge in theft cases in the area.
