The youth of Fort Portal have earlier today actively participated in the traditional procession of the Way of the Cross within Fort Portal City.
Hundreds of young individuals from secondary schools, higher institutions, and Catholic parishes such as Bukwali, Virika, and St. Charles Lwanga of the Fort Portal Catholic Diocese, turned up for this ecumenical event on Friday, March 22, 2024.
About the youth Way of the Cross
This year’s youth Pre- Way of the Cross, was organized by the Diocesean Youth Office in collaboration with Jesus Youth, an international Catholic movement promoting a purposeful and fulfilling life.
The procession commenced at Virika Cathedral at around 9:00 am, concluding with prayers at St. Charles Lwanga Town Parish.
The Participants
The participating schools included Rwimi, Ave Maria, St. Maria Goretti, Christ Aid, Divine Mercy, and Fort Portal SS, alongside institutions like Virika Nursing, Fins Medical University, and Uganda Pentecostal University.
Rev. Fr. Ronald Musinguzi, the managing director of Jubilee Radio, encouraged the youth to follow the example of Christ’s sacrificial love on the cross to the extent of accepting total shame for the forgiveness of sins. He emphasized the importance of caring for the less fortunate in the ongoing Lenten period.
Joseph Mwesige, a leader within the Jesus Youth Movement, commended the schools, parishes, and institutions for facilitating youth involvement in this significant event, noting its potential to foster a culture of compassion and service.
The Fort Portal Catholic Diocese Youth Chaplain, Rev Fr.Paul Mugabyomu, urged the youth to emulate Christ’s selflessness and compassion.
Among the attendees that journeyed with the students throughout the way of the Cross, were Rev.Sr.Joselyn Buhirwa, the Diocesan Youth Animator, Augustine Kaboha, the Diocesan Youth Leader, John Musinguzi, the Jesus Youth Diocesan Leader, as well as school patrons, patronesses, and teachers.
The official Way of the Cross procession in Fort Portal City will take place on Good Friday next week and according to the tentative program released by the office of Social Communications Commission Fort Portal Diocese, the procession will commence from Virika Cathedral with Bishop Muhiirwa Akiiki taking the introduction part.
