Last week Tuesday, October 1, 2024, Uganda joined the rest of the world to celebrate the International Day for Old Persons under the theme; “Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Older Persons is Everyone’s Responsibility because Aging is not optional.”
John Kinuge Apuuli of Nyango village, Kazingo ward, North Division of Fort Portal Tourism City will turn 84 years come February 2025 given that he was born on 11th February 1940 at 10:00am. Secret behind Long Life
In an interview with Jubilee radio, a youthful-looking gorilla war veteran from 1981-1986 asserted that the only way to live a long life is to eat healthily and exercise. He predicts doom for Uganda and Africa if the young generation doesn’t change the increasingly unhealthy lifestyle which reduces life expectancy on a daily basis.
He further cited alcohol and drug abuse as some of the common reasons Ugandans die early hence urging the youth to desist from taking drugs and alcohol because of the health-related issues they cause to the body among them diseases
Elderly Total Up to 5% of Ugandan Population
According to the recently concluded Uganda Population and Housing Census of June 2024, individuals aged 60 and above makeup 5% of the country’s population of roughly 2.3 million people.
Dominic Mafwabi Gidudu, the state minister for old persons recently raised concerns over the various forms of abuse that old persons face with data showing that 86% are neglected or isolated by caregivers while 44.7% suffer domestic violence and 49% endure psychological abuse.
Kinuge also cautioned young people from sleeping with different lovers saying it weakens their bodies and resources hence living a stressful life and dying before time.
