The Chief magistrate court in Fort Portal, has on Thursday January 19, sentenced six people to Katojo government prison to serve a one year jail term on charges of trafficking students.
The jailed, have been identified as Lyndon Mugumisirize,Kenneth Aligonza,Godfrey Namisi,Esther Namakoye, Rebbeca Nafuna and Enida Nandudu.
Court hearing
Court sitting in Fort Portal, presided over by her worship Phiona Angula,heard that in December 2022 in Fort Portal, the convicts trafficked 5 students’ from Mbale and Bulambuli districts promising them jobs.
Prosecution, also heard that Godfrey Namisi and Esther Namakoye called the students identified Nandudu Sophie, Muyama Phiona, Mutuwa Doreen and Napokoli Edwi Isiah and two others as inviting and convincing them to come to Fort Portal city for Jobs.
These, were told of a company called Empowered Consumerism operating under Dream Visionaries in Africa.
The prosecution further heard that the Victims came but did not get the promised jobs, instead they were asked to pay 1.600000/– shillings each for membership and were asked to convince more victims and later they realized that they have been conned after being tossed by the conmen
They later resorted to filing a case at Police leading to the arrest of six suspects.
The suspects
Muyama Phionah 29, student and Resident of Buyera village, Bunamaliro Parish, Buhanu Sub-county Bulambuli District, Napokoli Edwin Isiah 20 ,Student and resident of Buhatelema Village, Bushende Parish, Bukhalu Sub-county. Bulambuli District and Mutuwa Doreen 24 Nursing Student, resident of Shikundu Village, Bungwanyi parish, Bukiyende Sub-county, Mbale District.
Convicts to refund the stolen money
The court, ruled out that the convicts would return back the money they illegally got from the trafficked persons
However, the students who spoke to us were not happy with the court decision stating that the convicts would have refunded back their money.
