The Deputy Mayor of Fort Portal City, Betty Mujungu, has urged both women and men to make time to attend and actively engage in community meetings when they are held. She emphasized that such meetings are crucial for residents to interact with their leaders, voice their opinions, and receive important information about new programs and developments that could improve their lives.
Mujungu shared these thoughts during a community meeting organized by the Office of the Mayor in collaboration with FIDA Uganda at Butebe, North Division of Fort Portal City. She encouraged women to embrace entrepreneurship, even in small ventures, explaining that engaging in income-generating activities can reduce dependency on their husbands, thereby minimizing tension and, in some cases, preventing domestic violence.
Superintendent of Police Patrick Muhenda, the Regional Community Liaison Officer, urged women to report any form of abuse. He stressed that reporting abuse is vital in breaking the cycle of violence and protecting the rights of women and children. Despite social pressures or fears of judgment, he reassured women that seeking help is necessary to hold abusers accountable and create a safer environment for all. He also called on husbands to support their wives by allowing them time to pursue entrepreneurial ventures, noting that when both partners contribute to the family’s well-being, it fosters mutual respect and strengthens relationships.
Kanoiri Christine, a Village Health Team (VHT) member, and Edith Baguma, both residents of Kyakitara Village in Butebe Ward, expressed their gratitude to the Mayor and the partnering organizations. They thanked them for educating the public about their rights and providing a platform for community voices to be heard, ensuring inclusive decision-making and representation.
