Hail Storms Destroy Copious Crops & Property in Fort Portal

Residents worried of the possible famine that could arise in the nearby future following destroyed gardens

Hailstorms characterized by strong winds have destroyed property and crops in North division Fort Portal city.

Residents of Kiguma,Karago,Kibooro Nyakitojo,Burungu Birayoroba,Kaina Njenga and Kitarasa, have thus registered  losses after the hailstorm reportedly destroyed their crops and killed animals on Saturday.

 

Destroyed property

According to residents, the hailstorm  destroyed their banana plantations, cassava crops and gardens on top of killing of animals like goats among others.

Musinguzi Christopher, a resident of karago says that hailstorm that befall their  area on Saturday left his Banana plantation in shatters, revealing his worry for the famine that his family anticipates to face in future.

 

Another victim of the notorious hailstorm   Kemigisa, told us that the roof on her house was blown off due to heavy winds leaving her homeless.

 

 

Leaders take heed of the situation

However, Joseph Mashuhuko the division mayor,  stated that the division leadership in partnership with Red Cross Uganda have started on the process of registering the affected families whose names will be submitted to the office of prime minister and Ministry of disaster and preparedness for help.

 

 

Mashuhuko, has added that the division does not have a disaster budget to help people but is calls upon for government intervention since a larger number of people have been affected.
