The Government of Uganda GoU is actively promoting increased food production by facilitating irrigation for farmers. This initiative aims to enhance agricultural output, boost household incomes, and contribute to the nation’s aspiration to become a middle-income economy.
During an orientation session at the district headquarters about the Micro Scale Irrigation Project, Mr. Richard Rwabuhinga , the District Chairperson of Kabarole, addressed District councilors, sub-county Local Council III chairpersons, town council mayors, selected farmers, and technocrats urging them to rally communities behind the project to utilize available water sources to enhance production and address issues of food security and low income.
Mr. Bandeba Festus Besigye, the RDC Kabarole, praised the government for implementing the Micro Scale Irrigation Project, targeting farmers to increase food production. However, he emphasized the need for both technical and political leaders to guide individuals unfamiliar with government programs.
He highlighted that despite some misconceptions, many farmers are benefiting from modern agriculture technologies and President Museveni’s advice on utilizing 4-acre plots.
Mr. Isiingoma Baker, the Kabarole District Focal Person for the Micro Scale Irrigation Project, shared that the program, initiated last year, has already benefited 59 farmers. Three demonstration sites were established to educate farmers on Micro Scale irrigation technologies.
Baker, explained that this is a co-funding project where farmers contribute 25%, and the government contributes 75%. The beauty of the initiative lies in farmers being able to cultivate crops even during dry spells, leading to increased earnings.
