The Electoral Commission on Monday last week kicked off a 10-day exercise to display and confirm all the administrative units (villages and parishes) across the country.
The exercise was embraced in Bunyangabu, Fort-portal and Kabarole district has been ongoing at Sub-county, Division and ward levels ahead of LC1 elections slated for next year 2023.
According to Electoral Commission, from 2018 when the commission conducted LC 1 & LC2, Women Councils and village committee elections in 2018, they have received several petitions challenging the legal establishment of some villages and cells.
There were also disputes about the names and boundaries of some villages. The Commission also received complaints about the placement of some villages within particular sub-counties. There was also contestation over some villages located in wildlife conservation areas and forest reserves.
James Mugenyi the registrar of Fort-portal City has told us that the exercise went on well with no interruption until today 20th 2022 though a few challenges were registered. These included less turn-ups of people checking their villages on the list.
Everest Twinomujuni, the head of electro commission for Bunyangabu district, says they first conducted research and compiled a list of all villages and parishes in Uganda which has been brought back for masses to verify before the election exercise can begin.
According to the electoral commission, the last elections for LC1 & LC2of 2018 were conducted in a total number of 60,800 villages/cells and 8,387 parishes/wards, which have since increased to 10,690 parishes and 70,512 villages
