Residents of Kaswa Trading Center in Kaswa Parish, Busoro Sub-County, Kabarole District are concerned after elephants from Kibale National Park attacked their community last night, causing significant damage to their crop gardens.
The destroyed crops
The destruction affected banana plantations, cassava, beans, and other crops. According to locals, the elephants arrived late at night, and while some residents were able to chase them away before they could destroy more, the damage was still extensive.
Mugabe James, a lay reader at Kaswa Catholic Church, faced severe losses as his crops were destroyed while he was away. He expressed frustration with Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), claiming that their complaints about elephant attacks have been ignored.
Mukuru Alinda, the Secretary for Treasury at Kaswa A LC1, has called for UWA’s intervention, noting that the elephants have begun entering homes, posing a serious threat to residents’ safety.
LC3 Chairman Mugisa Leo, highlighted that the community has endured elephant attacks without compensation from UWA.
He reported that at least three people have been killed by elephants in the past three years in Busoro. Leo is advocating for a meeting between UWA, local leadership, area residents, and the RDC Kabarole to address the issue.
