The Kabarole district health officials are worried over the escalating number of pregnant mothers who deliver babies weighing less than 2.5 kilograms.
According the district health educator Kabarole, Catherine Kemigabo, the recent report conducted in January to April this year, indicates that a total of 246 pregnant mothers delivered babies weighing below 2.5 kilograms.
Kemigabo, attributes the problem to poor feeding, and mothers failing to go for antenatal care services in the nearby respective health centers.
The DHE, said that some other mothers are living with HIV, but when the do not take their given ARVs in the right way which affects the growth rate of the fetus.
Kemigabo, also advised mothers to regularly seek antenatal care, eat nutritious food once they conceive. This she said, will guide them in ensuring delivery healthy babies.
On a normal basis, a child weighs between 2.5 and 3.5 kilograms. If the baby weighs less than 2.5 kilograms, they are considered to have a low birth weight.
